Philosophy

Our self-defense system is not a martial art. We do not focus on the artistry of movement. We focus on swift action that will destabilize and neutralize opponents. Defensive Fighting Systems’ training consists of skill building and realistic stress inducing scenarios, which are integrated with cardio-reactive physical demands, that are all focused on preparing your mind and body for immediate reactions to danger.

Our hope is for a violent-free world; we know that this is not always the case. We truly believe everyone, regardless of perceived limitations, should have the opportunity to learn self-defense.

Defensive Fighting Systems strives to create an environment that is welcoming and inclusive. We do not tolerate inappropriate aggressive behavior. We value our relationship with each member because we believe in building a community of defensive-minded citizens.  The mission of Defensive Fighting Systems is to provide a Krav Maga self-defense training environment that is welcoming and accessible to all, adaptive, and customizable, which strives to meet our members where they are.  We do not bend our member to fit the system; we bend the system to fit the member.

Whato Expect

Attitude, Attire, Equipment, Hydration & Nutrition

Attitude: A good attitude is required. Learning self-defense is challenging both physically and mentally. Working closely with other members will require each us to be respectful, kind, courteous, and understanding. Members must help each other learn.

Surviving an attack requires one to not “give up” when tired or circumstances are not favorable. Training can be performed by students of all physical abilities. Some modifications may need to be made but the important aspect of the training is always participating to the best of your ability. The point of the class is to have fun while learning valuable skills.

Attire: Athletic apparel will allow the student to train without worry of baggy or restrictive clothing. The ability to regulate temperature will also help with training. In the beginning of class you may want warmer clothing but soon after too many clothes may make you too warm. You will sweat so dress in layers! The typical dress for training consists of; yoga pants, shorts, athletic pants, athletic top, quick-dry tops, and sneakers. Sneakers must be specifically for training as no street shoes are allowed on the soft training floor (to keep our training surface clean). The bottom of the shoe should be non-marking. Some students train barefoot or in socks (with grip).

Equipment: Each member is encouraged to buy MMA style 4oz gloves for punching and grappling. If you need suggestions please ask us. All male students MUST use groin protection! Although using groin protection is not very comfortable it is better than being hit without it. The probability is very high that you will get hit in the groin at some point during training!

Hydration and nutrition: It is the member’s responsibility to be physically prepared for every class. Avoid eating large meals or no meal before class. Everyone is different but in general if you come to class without having eaten in the past hour or two you run the risk of hypoglycemia. Too large (or too heavy) of a meal and your body will be in conflict for resources which will lead to cramping. Think about your hydration as well. Two to three hours before class you must start to increase your water intake. Without the proper hydration you run the risk of hypotension and syncope.
